When you spend almost all day, every day with a person for 9 years they become a part of you like an arm that if detached would make life void but it’s presence isn’t something we celebrate or appreciate. This is what exactly happened with Lee Yong-joon.
The story is about Vice Chairman of a major corporation, a man of perfection, Lee Young-joon, and his highly capable secretary, Kim Mi-so. Secretary Kim informs that she wants to resign after 9 years. She wishes to leave without providing any reason which bothers the Vice Chairman. The journey of the drama is about Lee Young-joon understanding what’s wrong with Secretary Kim and why she wants to leave. In the process, he realises that his will to not let her go is actually is his love. A love, that he has held onto for years.

Talking about the characters, Lee Young-joon is so confident of himself even with dark past, it is almost admirable and borderline annoying. His repeated self praises actually make you believe he is truly great. This doesn’t mean he is completely oblivious to his surroundings. He is wary of things, you do see a sincere and serious side to him when he is with Mi-so or his family. I love how he has held onto his promise to Mi-so he made when they were just kids. And how he was always looking out for her by trying to keep her at his side. His cold outlook and seemingly mean ways combined with a soft heart. I love a drama where a woman brings positive changes to man and his character.

I love Kim Mi-so’s character. She is so resilient, dedicated but at the same time self righteous too. Even though she was the youngest, Mi-so worked relentlessly to ease her family’s financial situation. She doesn’t demand the larger things in life and love how she even turned her in-laws down for the same and was adamant on doing the wedding her way.
The rest of the office cast is a great addition too. They bring their own eccentricities.

What I like about the drama is that there are no villians, no guns pulled out to move the drama. Simple everyday office life is the backdrop. A problem I encounter with almost every office romance drama is it’s stark contrast to reality. The guy is usually the heir or CEO, and falls in love with one of his employee, it’s all romance and play, no work. In reality, office romance is very hard to maintain amid the deadlines and piles of paperwork. With this drama, however, you could see people even the chairman succumbing to the work pressure at some point and relationships taking a back seat for very brief. The drama also had some scenes which are considered bold for Kdrama world bringing a new air.
The series went in a breeze format. I began liking the drama within the first episode itself which doesn’t happen very often so points for that. His past was the only serious angle to the drama and probably the only thing making it stand apart from other office romance.

There were some fun elements to the drama such as ‘Young-joon’s Aura’, his narcissistic behaviour and how Mi-so complimented it. When Mi-so accidently chokes people because of her habit of fixing neck ties. I absolutely loved Kang Ki Young’s character, it was my favourite in the drama. I wished he had more screen time.

There are a few things I learned from this drama that were good takeaways. A new way to eat rameyeon; the cute, simple but thoughtful bottle proposal.

There are some things I did not like about the drama. Kim Mi-so’s family setting felt a bit off considering how she turned up and how different she is from rest of the members. (But again, who are we to judge?) I do like the hint of body positivity provided through her family and how they aren’t afraid of being themselves. The characters in general had a typicality which made them a bit predictable. Although there was chemistry, I could always feel that boss-secretary relation just idly being there. It wasn’t very ‘oh, now we are a couple’ kinda thing although they did try. There was always this restriction I felt from both ends. It felt like they were both holding back even when all was good.

Was it a good comedy drama? Yes, definitely! I laughed a lot. Was it ‘the best drama’ I ever watched? No. I felt the story line wasn’t very different from what is offered in market in name of office romance. But yes in terms of characters coming together to create comedy it was good. I felt it was a bit overhyped with the ratings. There are better dramas I have watched in terms of plotlines. However, I still enjoyed watching it.

K-Drama Review: “The K2” solidifies Ji Chang Wook as an action hero but also establishes the fact that strong anti-hero females are a lasting trend

I saw some clips and action scenes of ‘The K2’ on YouTube and became interested in the show. I finished the show within a span of 1.5 days with ample sleep ofcourse. I have to say this is the most action packed K-drama I have seen thus far (DOTS, following second).

I wanted to find out why the show is called K2, what is the significance. 15 mins into the drama and there is some punch packed action. My hopes rose, seeing how well it was choreographed. It’s safe to say the action didn’t disappoint and you find it packed around pretty much the whole drama. Although, the excessive pause made it unrealistic to some extent and fast pace of camera sometimes made it hard to follow through. I had to go back a few seconds sometimes to know what happened.

The background music and ending credit song caught my attention from the first go. I searched out for it and found it was the main theme for the drama, furthermore the words that I wasn’t able to grasp (other than all of the dialogues in Korean) were in German. The words had a lot of meaning attached to the story and for a Kdrama having a ost composed in German was much surprising (my initial guess was spanish since that’s where the story began). To tell you the truth, it’s absolutely catchy and is still ringing in my ears. Most of the ost is instrumental and pretty good depicting the mood of the story. Soft for emotional scenes and thriller for suspense or action. Few episodes into it and you could guess with the main theme playing that you will witness some action or dynamic transition in plot.
Spoiler alert!

Left to Right: Go Anna (Im Yoon-ah), Kim Jeha (Ji Chang Wook), Choi Yoo-jin (Song Yoon-ah), Jang Se-joon (Jo Sung-ha)

Coming to the story, it is not something entirely new to the universe. An agent (Kim Jeha) like no other, suffered a tradegy, gone rogue, fighting against the world but still being good and fair to the innocent. He fights for the right, wants revenge and along the way encounters love (Go Anna). However, the intricacies are what makes these stories and characters a bit more unique. It’s always interesting to watch these kinds of stories roll out every time. (Action with a purpose, as I call them are a favorite genre of mine).

There are some things I absolutely loved about the drama. If there was a damsel in distress it wasn’t without a strong antagonist and that too a female (Choi Yoo Jin). Not often do we see this gender being given so much authority and control to move the story.

I loved the character of Choi Yoo Jin even though she was evil, very evil but there was something about her that made her vulnerable and deserving of bit sympathy. Amazing acting by Song Yoon-ah, she ruled the show for me. She has so many layers and ultimately turns out to not so bad a character. Infact, she is better off than likes of Mr. Jang (father of Go Anna). I wanted to like this character, giving reasons for his shitty behavior of a playboy or towards his own daughter (he still loves her mother, he is trying to protect his own daughter) but even after his whole sacrifice at the end I haven’t been able to like him. I understand that his political career was the only thing he had left and it was to avenge his love. But you need to draw a line and not hurt and put the only thing you could possibly love through danger and much emotional turmoil again and again.

The character of Go Anna played by Im Yoon-ah is much in controversy. Some say her acting isn’t as strong as her kpop gig, some say she doesn’t compliment well with Ji Chan Wook and there is no chemistry, others say she has improved a lot. Well I have nothing to compare her with, neither her past works nor many actresses. I honestly found her acting well according to the role given to her. I felt the role demanded of her to show less emotions, to act aloof. I felt the sparks between Go Anna and Kim Jeha but I wish they burnt like fire, I wish for more scenes where the chemistry could be explored more. Nevertheless, it was great.

I also enjoyed the love traingle between Kim Jeha, Go Anna and Choi Yoo Jin. It touched upon a restricted topic of older woman loving a young guy. From the first go I felt that Choi Yoo Jin started liking Kim Jeha but it wasn’t very clear, the show makers deliberately kept it that way I guess and I loved it. The way she should stood strong, caught hold of her feelings amidst her goals and also the way she unfolded and exposed herself to Jeha.

Coming to the titular character, Ji Chang Wook, he has done some amazing work. It was my first drama of Ji Chang Wook. I am completely mesmerised by his ability to induce intensity and comedy equally well into the scene. He has performed some amazing action and was truly the wolf of show.

Few of my favourite scenes include the inital fight scene (episode 1), the car chase with Kim Jeha and Yoo Jin (episode 2), bathroom fight (episode 3), taking Anna to infirmary (episode 7), euroem and ding (episode 8), how Kim Jeha looks at Anna through CCTV and then his eye shades episode, all the tiny details make your heart melt, the ending (episode 16) and choi yoo jin’s role in it, she was literally the queen of the forest!

After finishing the show, it was difficult for me to imagine any korean actor that I famously know of other than Ji Chang Wook to play K2. He has done sweet justice to his role. The drama kept me engrossed throughout and due to the suspense attached I was constantly on my feet. The only disappointment I have from the show is not being able to K2’s real name.

The whole soundtrack of the show is so so good it be enough to make you want to watch the show. I love the soundtrack of the show so much that I usually have it playing on repeat. All in all, I love the show a lot and I do keep coming back to it.

Romance is a bonus book: Kdrama Review

I finished watching the drama Romance is a bonus book. I started watching the drama after I saw a few clips of the actor, Lee Jong Suk that caught my attention. And also the title was something that really caught my eye. It was different, catchy and mysterious. This show has been the longest Korean show for me in terms of the time I took to finish it. It is beyond 1 month, not because it was boring but because I was busy. But yes, stretching it over such long period may have made it a little less interesting for me.

The story is about a woman named Kang Dan-i who is desperately trying to comeback as an advertising copywriter after years of break. Her best friend is Cha Eun-ho who is a successful author and a senior editor at a publishing company. During her difficult phase, Cha Eun-ho tries to help Dan-i overcome her personal and professional obstacles. Slowly both realise their underlying feelings for each other and how romance is just a bonus on their everlasting friendship.

The first 2 episodes were really really interesting. Like I said not a lot Kdramas start of with a bang for me. I need to dig deep into the story first. But this one did it for me. The actress has played the character absolutely beautifully. She feels irreplaceable (although I don’t know a ton of kdrama actresses).
The first few episodes were so realistic, I could actually relate to her story and her struggles to make her comeback, wanting to do something for herself after a long time. It was touching. When I learnt about how the two of them became friends, I thought that Eun-ho should have done a lot more. (Spoiler Alert!) I mean the person saved your life, made you a successful writer. You should be indebted.
I realised later that not only did he do a lot for her, he thought a lot for her too. A guy or a friend may do a lot for you but they may not always think for you. This made Eun-ho different.

Anyhow, the show in general made me learn a lot about books, what goes into making them, behind the scenes of publishing. It made me realise it’s not as easy as it seems. And also I had a new found respect for books even the ones I don’t like. There is so much backstory to a book and so many people involved, it is actually matter of life for some people. The deadlines and how people relentlessly work for it like it’s their baby. This is writer’s gold.

The marketing ideas discussed are unique and something I haven’t seen, if not new. I really loved them, it was an eye opener. There is an epilogue at the end of the episode which includes quotes and captions by the characters. This in my opinion is such a nice way to kind of take the story forward or reflect on something in past but from a different perspective. The comic scenes induced in between are not so subtle but they do make you smile if not laugh. Something’s however were highlighted more than necessary like the writer’s story, it kind of became more important than the characters itself. The protagonist’s child was dropped from the picture altogether only to be talked of at the end, which gives it a round end but does not look realistic. It makes me wonder if she talked to her child the whole time? Not even told her daughter about her boyfriend?
I really like how they have used the ‘Moon is Beautiful’ phrase. How Eun-ho used it to convey I love you to Dan-i. How they even used it to thank the viewers for watching the show. It reminds me of the phrase ‘I purple you’ from BTS.

I am not a big fan of ost from drama. It wasn’t something I listened to again and again. And for some reason unbeknownst to me, I kept picturing Dan-i and Eun-ho more as best friends than lovers, maybe because their friendship was real solid and enduring.

I liked the ending it was really soft and deep. It talked about how we should be like a book and the book we are may not be liked by some but it will also be loved by some. Be a book for someone.

All in all, it was a great drama with a good and different storyline. If you like thoughtful dramas, books, or are struggling professional, this one might just be for you. It definitely makes up on my must watch list if not the top ones.

Uncontrollably Fond: Kdrama Review

I watched this series right after ‘the heirs‘ primarily because of Kim Woobin. When I first started the series it did not catch my attention. I tried to watch the first episode over a number of days again and again. I skipped off a bit from initial 4 episodes. The background scores in 3rd episode helps a lot.

The story is about Shin Joon Young and Noh Eul who were best friends. Shin Joon Young wanted to become a lawyer but a tragic incident made him switch to acting and singing. Noh Eul, on the other hand is a documentary producer who tries to be righteous however her rigorous conditions sometimes make her behavior unethical. It is when she is asked to film his documentary the two meet again years later and love blossoms.

I actually found the storyline good, it is much more intricate then what is visible on the surface. But the title wasn’t all justified as per the story. I really liked the playback of the story of Eul and Joon Young and how they fell in love was touching. However, later on I expected a lot of hardcore romance on their front. To my surprise there wasn’t much. The romance was mainly indirect like Joon Young beating the other guy who said mean things to Eul. And pushing the girl away because he thinks he doesn’t deserve her. ( But why tell her to love you and listen to only you and confuse her when you know you will leave after sometime. This annoyed me a bit) Also, the show felt a little more inclined towards justice and conscious then the love story to be precise and hence I felt the title wasn’t all justified. Even so I still like the drama for dealing with the darker sides of both good and bad people.

The plot was good, the present day and flashback went well together which created enough suspense. The back story played exactly when it was needed explaining everything. I liked that bit about the show.

I was a bit confused between Joon Young’s moments he imagined in his brain and the actual reality.
Also, light could be shed on how they met and how he developed the friendship and then love. (There were instances but not enough) I really thought I would cry alot as everyone talks of the show like that but I didn’t that much. Something’s really connected and a few scenes did make me teary eyed but I never ended up crying a bucket. There were three scenes that got me on my feet. The one was when he proposes in the concert. It was too cute. The one where Eul tells him the exact time she fell in love. And the one where his mother visits him and he can’t recognize her.

Gif: weheartit

I think the beginning was really stretched out. And the end episodes were a little in rush. The show deserved a proper closure. Like he could have made a video on how much he loved everyone, his mother and especially Eul and how he wants them to live afterwards. Also, much could be shown on how the other supporting characters lived afterwards.

Gif: weheartit

Kim Woobin was a obviously a stand out and the reason I continued watching. In every drama of his that I have watched, he plays this jerk who straightens out later on. It suits him but then I want him to able to live his love in a show atleast. I want to watch him in more shows as lead where tradegy doesn’t do away with his happy ever after. Everytime Kim Woobin was acting sick, I could only think about how he must have felt when he actually went through cancer afterwards. For once, I am glad that reel and real life are different for he came out as a winner. Bae Suzy was very prominent in the initial episodes and the ending episodes. In-between, her acting did not prompt a lot of emotion in me.

Regardless, the chemistry between Kim Woobin and Bae Suzy was really good and some front end romantic scenes would have helped the show a lot more. You can’t help but fall for Kim Woobin. His acting skills are amazing. He seems very natural whether it’s a sad scene or a happy one. His smirk. Oh god. His smirk is to die for. Everytime he does, I too have a smile on face. I didn’t fully understand some of the supporting roles. However, I liked Jin Kyung’s acting along with Choi Moo-sung.

The drama ost is one of its biggest bonus. It is very beautiful and profound. ‘Only you’ by Junggigo is a favourite, it’s a perfect mix of romantic and upbeat. The song ‘A Little Braver’ should be a theme song for this drama along with ‘Only You’. All the instrumental soundtrack are also amazing, something you can’t help but listen to. ‘Love Hurts’ by Hwanhee, ‘My Heart Says’ by Kim Na Young, ‘Don’t Push Me’ by Red Velvet’s Wendy and Seulgi, all make an unexplainable sadness and yearning in your heart whereas the song ‘Across The Ocean’ by New Empire makes for a happy beat. Few songs have also been contributed by the two leads. Even if you are not fond of this drama, you wouldn’t regret watching it for it’s soulful music in the least.

Overall, I would still say that if you like a subtle romance that could still make you cry a bucket then this drama is for you.

This drama teaches you that you can correct your mistakes, you can seek justice and even love within a limited time as well. It is a matter of choice.

Why Watch it?

  • If you are a fan of subtle romance with other subplot taking the mainframe
  • If you are a Kim WooBin fan, he has done his very best here
  • If you are a Bae Suzy fan, the chemistry between the leads is really good
  • If you wish to watch something sentimental that could make you cry or if you like bitter-sweet endings
  • Amazing Ost
